You can also take a regularly scheduled tour of the Schindler-designed Mackey Apartments which are nearby. Many consider Neutra one of the most important twentieth-century architects and this house tour gives a chance to see his home. One of Frank Lloyd Wright's most important works, in a style he called "California Romantic," designed in 1917 and built between 1919 and 1923 for oil heiress Aline Barnsdall. The complex includes the main house, garage, and one other surviving structure. Schindler came to California to work for Frank Lloyd Wright and supervise construction of the Hollyhock House.

Schindler's private residence is open to the public several days a week, and no reservations are required. “Connecticut’s Bookshelf” is on display through Oct. 13 at the Connecticut Museum of Culture and History, 1 Elizabeth St., Hartford. The museum hosts monthly and annual events at Poe House and around the City of Baltimore. In the period from 1980 to 2011, the museum hosted a number of Poe events throughout the year. It claimed, for example, the largest Poe birthday celebration in the world held every January at the Westminster Hall and Burying Ground, where Poe was buried following his death in October 1849. In 2009, the museum staged a third funeral for Poe (theatrical) for the Poe Bicentennial at Westminster Hall. Over 1,200 people attended two services. The Edgar Allan Poe House, a National Historic Landmark, is open to visitors throughout the year.

The collection even includes his childhood bed! Poe lived in Richmond, Virginia, at various times of his life ranging from his youth up through adulthood. Given how much of his life he spent in and around Richmond, it is a bit surprising that none of his actual homes have been preserved. Nonetheless, the Poe Museum was established in 1922 in the oldest building in Richmond. The founders collected anything they could that related to the author’s life, including furniture, correspondence, manuscripts, trinkets, and clothing, just to name some of the type of exhibits. The ranging collection even includes such oddities as a lock of Poe’s hair collected after his death and some socks that were found in a trunk that belonged to the author.
If you love arts and crafts architecture, this is the house for you. A well-preserved and fascinating example of Arts and Crafts architecture, designed by Greene and Greene, it was built in 1908 for David and Mary Gamble of the Procter & Gamble Company. Cultural figures from around the world flocked to the new memorial, which counted among its early visitors Gertrude Stein, H.P. Lovecraft, Henry Miller, and Salvador Dalí. A peculiar feature of the house is the insignia “IR” to the right of the east window on the south side of the house. One theory holds that the initials stand for “Jacobus Rex” meaning “King James” and that the house was built during the brief reign of James II from 1685 to 1688. In 1824, a young Edgar Allan Poe was a part of a junior honor color guard that escorted the Revolutionary War General Marquis de Lafayette around Richmond. After escorting Lafayette around the neighborhood, Poe and the honor guard took the general to the Old Stone House, the residence of the Ege family which had helped supply Lafayette’s troops during the Revolution. In the years to come, Poe would pass the house several times on his walks down Main Street to Rockett’s Landing.
Large parties will have to book separate tour times–rotating or re-entry is NOT permitted. The Connecticut Museum of Culture and History is a colorful, accessible, family friendly place. “Connecticut’s Bookshelf” fits the museum’s general style of bright, friendly, informative displays. An 1843 book already refers to the century-old house as “the old Stone House” and calls it the oldest house in Richmond. There is no evidence that Poe ever entered the home.
